Pocahontas is the Randolph County seat, a city of about 7,900 on the Black River with one of the best-preserved historic downtown squares in the region. The 1872 Italianate courthouse anchors the square, and many of the surrounding commercial buildings have been restored. The housing around the historic district is largely older stock.
